2. Funding Rate
The funding rate for crypto perpetual futures is a mechanism designed to keep the contract price close to the price of the underlying asset.
A funding rate is a periodic payment exchanged between long and short positions. These funding payments are fully peer-to-peer, and no additional platform fee is charged on them.
This rate is calculated based on the difference between the contract price and the oracle price of the underlying asset.
To stay aligned with centralized exchanges (CEXs), the interest rate component is preset at 0.01% every 8 hours, which is equivalent to 0.00125% per hour. This reflects the cost difference between borrowing USD and borrowing spot crypto assets.
The premium component fluctuates based on the difference between the perpetual contract price and the oracle price of the underlying asset. If the contract price is higher than the oracle price, the premium—and therefore the funding rate—is positive, meaning longs will pay shorts. Conversely, if the contract price is lower than the oracle price, the funding rate is negative, meaning shorts will pay longs.
On MyDex Futures, funding is settled once every hour. The funding payment is added to or deducted from the relevant account balance during each funding settlement cycle.
The funding rate is designed to prevent the perpetual contract price from deviating too far from the price of the underlying asset. When the funding rate is relatively high, it can encourage traders to open positions in the opposite direction, helping bring the contract price closer to the oracle price of the underlying asset.
